This document is<br \/>\nmeant to supply guidance to end-users as to how to specify and<br \/>\nverify that terminated products complying to a particular FOCIS<br \/>\nstandard will perform as expected regardless of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manufacturer of the unterminated connectors\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Supplier of the terminated assemblies\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Different operators within the same supplier<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The underlying issue is that specifying optical performance<br \/>\nrequirements is not enough. Without also specifying end-face<br \/>\nprofiles, the user can be faced with a product that passed<br \/>\nspecified insertion loss\/return loss requirements against a test<br \/>\nstandard but performs quite differently when mated against other<br \/>\nterminations. In addition, defining and requiring that the end-face<br \/>\nprofile be within some range is important for interconnect<br \/>\nreliability.<\/p>\n<p>Various types of end-face profiles and recommended values for<br \/>\nthe most popular ferrule\/fiber configurations are provided in this<br \/>\nTSB. The values provided in this document are derived from various<br \/>\nresources, including the Telecommunications Industry Association,<br \/>\nTelcordia, NASA, and various connector manufactures. For particular<br \/>\napplication and\/or particular combination of fiber\/cable\/connector<br \/>\ncombination, the user is directed to determine if other values or<br \/>\ncriteria are more appropriate.
