The major attenuation is that due to diffraction<br \/>\nat the barrier edges. Additional components of sound attenuation,<br \/>\nwhich are accounted for, are those due to the increased propagation<br \/>\npath length between source and observer, and to source directivity.<br \/>\nGuidance is also given on possible sound reduction resulting from<br \/>\natmospheric attenuation. The theoretical basis of the prediction<br \/>\nprocedure is also described. Its application to the estimation of<br \/>\nsound attenuation by a finite barrier by considering the<br \/>\ndiffraction at each edge is explained.
