Scope<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.1<\/p>\n

This Standard applies to<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(a) steam sterilizers that<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(i) have a chamber volume of 42.5 L (1.5 ft3) or greater; and<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(ii) are intended for use in health care facilities;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(b) emergency (flash) sterilizers; and <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(c) washer-disinfectors (when used in sterilizer mode).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(1) In this Standard, sterilizer is used as a blanket term for the three types of sterilizers listed in this Clause.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(2) Tests involving modifications to sterilizer controls or safety features can endanger personnel if appropriate safety precautions are not taken.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(3) See CAN\/CSA-Z314.13 for recommended practices for emergency (flash) sterilization.<\/p>\n

1.2<\/p>\n

This Standard specifies minimum construction and performance requirements for sterilizers to ensure that<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(a) the conditions required for sterilization are achieved; and<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(b) the personnel who operate the equipment can perform their tasks safely.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This Standard does not cover<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(a) pre- or post-sterilization procedures;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(b) operator requirements;<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(c) tests for assessing the probability of product sterility; and<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(d) routine quality control release tests.<\/p>\n
