This easy-to-use format includes the full text of ICC 500-2014: ICC/NSSA Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters, including tables and figures, followed by the corresponding commentary for each section. The commentary explains the background and intent of the requirements and suggests the most effective method of application. Published by the International Code Council and the National Storm Shelter Association, the ANSI-approved 500-2014 standard is referenced in the 2015 IBC® and IRC® and provides minimum design and construction requirements for storm shelters that provide a safe refuge from storms producing high winds, hurricanes and tornadoes. The standard provides design requirements for the main wind-resisting structural system and components and cladding of these shelters, and provides basic occupant life safety and health requirements for these shelters including means of egress, lighting, sanitation, ventilation, fire safety and floor space. The 2015 IBC, under certain conditions, requires design of protected storm shelter areas in accordance with ICC 500-2014 for emergency operation centers, 911 call stations, police/fire/rescue/ambulance stations and some Group E occupancies. In addition to treating each section of the standard, this Commentary also addresses many items that have been revised or added since the 2008 edition, including: Occupant load exception for dedicated facilities Shelter installation requirements, including anchor locations and minimum required capacity for each anchor Roof rainfall rates and primary and secondary drainage systems for hurricane areas Post installed anchors and Special Inspection requirements to verify anchor installation New definitions such as for various areas of furnishings and Impact Protective System Anchor calculations for doors, windows and shutters and many other revised and new sections
