La présente partie de l'ISO/TR 14179 présente une méthode de détermination de la capacité de charge thermique
des engrenages qui comprend des mesures réalisées dans la pratique sur des appareils d'origine. Cette méthode
peut consister à mesurer la perte de puissance ou la dissipation thermique, ou bien les deux, ou encore, pour les
appareils lubrifiés par barbotage, à déterminer la température en régime quasi stationnaire dans le bain d'huile.
Les méthodes de calcul pour chaque composante des pertes et de la dissipation thermique décrites dans la
présente partie de l'ISO/TR 14179 doivent être considérées comme des méthodes alternatives.
